Between this and the model's license, it seems like one is stuck with using this for personal use?

There's a lot of irony in this rant. Rob was instrumental in developing distributed computing and cloud technologies that directly contributed to the advent of AI.

I wish he had written something with more substance. I would have been able to understand his points better than a series of "F bombs". I've looked up to Rob for decades. I think he has a lot of wisdom he could impart, but this wasn't it.

You have zero idea about his state of mind when he got this stupid useless email.

Not to mention, this is a tweet. He wasn't writing a long form text. It's ridiculous that you jumped the gun and got "disappointed" for the cheapest form of communication some random idiot did to someone as important as him.

And not to mention, I AM YET to see A SINGLE DAMN MIT License text or BSD-2/3 license text they should have posted if these LLMs respected OSS licenses and it's code. So as someone who's life's work dragged through the mud only to send a cheap email using the said tech which abused your code... It's absolutely a worthy response IMO.

Sometimes you just have had enough and need to get some expletives out.

Yes, several times a day. I use summarization for webpages, messages, documents and YouTube videos. It’s super handy.

I mainly use a custom prompt using ChatGPT via the Raycast app and the Raycast browser extension.

That said, I don’t feel comfortable with the level of AI being shoved into browsers by their vendors.

Aren't you worried it will fuck up your comprehension skills? Reading or listening.

No, I still read a ton of articles and books. This just lets me be pickier about what I read. There's a lot of low quality and/or AI generated writing on the Internet.

Not him, but no. I read a ton already. Using LLMs to summarize a document is a good way to find out if I should bother reading it myself, or if I should read something else.

Skimming and being able to quickly decide if something is worth actually reading is itself a valuable skill.

There's a limit to how fast I can feasibly skim, and LLMs definitely do it faster.

Both of these are quick, easy reads. Don't read about the plots ahead of time.

Bonus: Anything by Kevin Kelly. He always seemed to be over-hyped by influencers, so I avoided his work for the longest time. That was a mistake.

I find that modern versions of dotnet seem to run better on Linux. And from what I see from Azure and from MSFT engineer blog posts, I'm assuming dotnet support on Linux is a higher priority than on Windows.

In any case, their claim that dotnet is a bad framework made me chuckle out loud. I'd like to see their impression of what a better framework looks like.

I have the same result : performances on Linux are better and this is a real focus for MSFT engineer (Azure has a tons of linux instances running dotnet)

I’m not sure why people are surprised. If you watch Nadella interviews, he tells you what he thinks and where he wants to take the company.

He touts AI, services, agentic copilot, and all the other stuff customers are railing against.

Some Windows manager got crucified on X recently for an enthusiastic tweet about turning Windows into an agentic OS. People called for this persons firing. But, this was straight out of Nadella’s playbook.

Windows users are not customers. Businesses are. Tech conglomerates and everyone adjacent are going for the big money, it's what everyone is doing , it really is a fantastic world devoid of anything but ROI numbers. The fastest way to get rich or die trying, gangstas got nothing on these cats.

I'm doubtful many businesses are requesting many of these features.

I don't think it's wise for them to want stuff like Recall (data exfiltration) or current state of the art agents doing calculations or analysis for them -- at least without a qualified human closely reviewing it's output and conclusions.

I do see businesses wanting simpler, more reliable software with fluid and consistent interfaces, but MSFT isn't focusing on that.

Business owners are stupid, and they, too, need to signal to their investors that they're "all in" on AI.

AI is, currently, more of a culture than a product for businesses. At least, the ones that don't literally make the models. I'm sure a lot of business owners really do want all the AI stuff, and then their employees will just work around it, like they do with all sales or signaling driven decisions.

1. This news site is analogous to a tabloid. They're just rehashing info from K's appearance in a LADBible video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BXtDH2IXKY8

2. While I don't even dislike the guy, let alone hate him, Kiriakou tends to make grandiose and controversial claims that get discredited.

3. Kiriakou hasn't been privvy to CIA tech since roughly 2004. Yes, before the era of modern smartphones, all devices were pwned. He's been doing the rounds on any podcast that will take him where he elaborates on these claims further and it's pretty clear that he doesn't have decent subject matter knowledge.

Can a lot of phones and TVs and cars be exploited? Yes. Keep your devices patched. And, don't do things that attract the CIA's attention enough that they're putting in the significant effort it takes to pwn your TV or car.

tl;dr: If you're in a position where the CIA is targeting you, worry.

Remember...sometimes the target doesn't have a smart phone or watch much TV so those people around a target become at risk. That could be YOU. https://theintercept.com/document/hunt-sys-admins/

Yes, in fact, during my days of red teaming, if I couldn't get info on an HVT (think celebrity), I'd go after their not-famous relatives[1] and friends, who generally had very bad opsec/persec. It was extremely effective.

1. An effective tactic is to friend relatives and friends on social media. From there, you either get to the HVT's data because it's set to viewable for "friend of friend" or you be patient, friend more of their friends and family and eventually friend the HVT directly, using your "connections" as social proof.

A very famous celebrity family was very susceptible to this tactic. After this project, they... tidied up their social media permissions.

Can you elaborate? I have a Series 11 and I never see the Smart Stack.

I’m not even sure how to get it to show up.

Ah, I wear my watch with the crown facing outward and up on my wrist a bit so I'm not prone to moving the crown. Thanks for the response!

Gave me CPR and saved my life.
